Terminal disinfection and cleaning technologies for Hybrid Operating Rooms.

Terminal Disinfection Technologies for Hybrid ORs
Maintaining a sterile environment is vital in a Hybrid Operating Room. While Catheterization Lab sterility standards are not usually as strict as an Operating Theatre, the Hybrid OR environment demands the more strict approach to be taken. While most surgical cases will only require minimally invasive procedures, a main focus of the Hybrid OR environment is to be prepared for the worst case scenario.
Surgical Site Infections (SSI) and Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) are of the utmost concern in these high-tech environments and every measure possible should be taken to avoid them. The war against these 'never events' is perpetual as pathogens mutate to resist the latest antibiotics and chemical disinfectants.
In the past few years, leading facilities have adopted portable enhanced environmental disinfection
systems that utilize ultraviolet-C (UVC) light to complement infection control protocols already in place to battle superbugs such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff ), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and other multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs).
TRU-D Smart UVC Disinfection System
The premier portable UVC device is the TRU-D Smart UVC Disinfection System. TRU-D, short for Total Room Ultraviolet Disinfection, is a 5-foot-5 germ-killing UV disinfection robot on a mission to kill pathogens that stalk health care environments. The UV disinfection robot works by generating UV light energy that modifies the DNA structure of an infectious cell so that it cannot reproduce, and a cell that cannot reproduce cannot colonize and thus harm patients.
TRU-D is the only portable UV disinfection device on the market with Sensor360™ technology, which calculates the time needed to react to room variables – such as size, geometry, surface reflectivity and the amount and location of equipment in the room – and effectively deliver a lethal dose during a single cycle from a single, central location in the room. It is an automated, remotely operated system that self-adjusts to the size and content dynamics of any room to deliver the proper dose of UV light energy necessary for complete terminal disinfection.
After a hospital staff member cleans the Hybrid OR using traditional methods, TRU-D is rolled into the room to “finish the job”. Set-up of the TRU-D UV robot is quick & easy and does not require input of room measurements or covering of windows and vents. The system can disinfect an entire room – including shadowed spaces – from one location, eliminating the need to move it to multiple places in the room.
Patents for TRU-D were granted after more than a decade of research and clinical trials, and
results of TRU-D have been supported by multiple independent peer-reviewed studies
conducted by leading authorities in infection control and epidemiology. TRU-D SmartUVC is the device of choice for nearly all of the existing independent research on UV disinfection technology, including an ongoing $2 million study funded by the Centers for Disease Control’s Epicenter Program study at Duke University, the University of North Carolina and eight other hospitals in the region.
There are more than 100 TRU-Ds currently slaying superbugs in hospitals across the U.S.,
Canada and Europe.
